MPAA Overturns 'Blue Valentine's' NC-17 Rating

Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams' controversial romantic drama film "Blue Valentine" originally received NC-17 rating but MPAA decided to overturned their decision.

The Classification and Rating Administration appeals board gave the movie the R rating without any changes to the film.

The original NC-17 rating was due to its graphic sex scene between stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling.

Michelle Williams recently said in an interview that she prefer to keep the original rating rather than edit some scenes.

She says, "I’m happy for it to stay just like it is. Genuinely, I am. Movies get to have long lives and it’ll be judged and rejudged in 10 or 20 or 30 years, and I’ll be curious to see how it stands. It seems like such a condemnation. It feels like such a slap on the hand, like you’ve been a bad kid or something."

It will hit the theaters on December 31st, 2010.

Michelle admitted to UK’s Daily Mail that she is terrified of taking on the role.

"I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist, eventually. Physically and vocally, everything about her is different from me. I’ve kind of gone to school and had teachers to help me understand Marilyn, so I could project an essence of her."

Michelle also shared that she felt the charisma and character of the iconic blonde.

"I feel like we live together. At a certain point, something else does take over. I don’t quite feel myself these days."

The film chronicles Marilyn's moment in London in 1957 especially shooting the film "The Prince and the Showgirl" with Laurence Oliver.

Blue Valentine is an intimate, shattering portrait of a disintegrating marriage.

On the far side of a once-passionate romance, Cindy (Michelle Williams) and Dean (Ryan Gosling) are married with a young daughter. Hoping to save their marriage, they steal away to a theme hotel. We then encounter them years earlier, when they met and fell in love—full of life and hope.

Michelle Williams shared on the October 2009 issue of Vogue that she is somehow still reluctant in talking about the untimely death of Heath Ledger.

Highlights of her interview:

Michelle on declining interviews about Heath's death: “I didn’t know what my boundaries were for a long time, which made interviews feel very unsafe,” she says. “I can talk about grief, because that’s mine; about single parenting; about trying to balance work and kids. But what I don’t have to talk about is what happened between Heath and me in our relationship.”

Michelle on coping with Heath's death: “I was holding it together by a string and a paper clip in the fall and winter. I didn’t know if I could keep it all together… You console yourself by saying it’s all a deepening process. But it’s wired. After the first year, the pain is less intense; it’s less immediate. But the magical thinking goes away too. And that’s a whole new reckoning. But every time I really miss him and wonder where he’s gone, I just look at [Mathilda.]”

Michelle's happy times with Heath: “Brokeback Mountain was an unrepeatable moment in time, a very charmed time in my life. I was in love; I was in a movie I was proud to be a part of, and with a beautiful brand-new baby. Everything was good in that moment.”

Michelle on paparazzi: “It’s because of this tragedy that there’s more paparazzi. That is hard to be graceful and understanding about… It’s hard to be the man and the woman in that [paparazzi] situation. Heath always used to do that for us.”

Michelle on falling in love: “I thought falling in love again was the only thing that was going to save me from the pain. This erroneous idea: It just makes things more complicated.”

Martin Scorsese’s "Shutter Island" - teaser art poster

The story was set in 1954 on Shutter Island when two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island's fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane. They encounter a web of lies, a hurricane and a deadly inmate riot that leaves them trapped on the island.

Some interview excerpts:

Is it hard balancing your work with your daughter?
It’s not easy. Last April I was over in London doing a movie called Incendiary with Ewan McGregor. It’s about a woman grieving after losing her husband and son in a terrorist attack. It was a brutal role and arduous: six-day weeks, 14 hour-days. I was like the walking dead towards the end. Matilda would visit me everyday on-set for lunch and I’d race home to put her to bed. My only days off were Sundays and as much as I’d want to pass out, I’d try to take her out somewhere fun so she didn’t associate me with boredom. The only time that is really my own these days is after I’ve put her to bed and until I go to bed. That’s about two hours.

Was it hard doing all your growing up on TV?
I was 16 when I started. It’s a strange record to have of those awkward years. It was a very important time for my personal development. When I came onto that show I didn’t have any taste or values. Doing that show gave me self-esteem and my work ethic. But, weirdly enough, it also gave me some privacy to develop my ideas about who I was as an actress and what I did and did not want to do.

Did you go to Katie Holmes’ wedding?
Everybody wants to know that. No, I didn’t go because I was working on The Tourist. To be honest, we’re not really in touch.

Since the death of her former partner Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams released her first statement.

“Please respect our need to grieve privately. My heart is broken. I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up with the best memories of him.”
