Did we read that you had some background in musical theater?

If you read that, it was probably a lie. My musical theater experience includes singing “Puttin’ on the Ritz” in a high school production of Singin’ in the Rain. “Puttin’ on the Ritz” isn’t even in Singin’ in the Rain! My mother, who’s a delightful British woman, came up to me after the play and said, “Oh, Cobie. You were wonderful. You couldn’t sing a note, but you sang it anyway!”

Your character has dated all the available men on the series.

Almost. Now I’m hoping to start a lesbian relationship with Lily on the show. Alyson Hannigan is foxy!

We love your show because it has a raunchy sense of humor without being crass.

Cobie Smulders is best known for her role as Robin Scherbatsky on CBS television series How I met Your Mother. She plays TV reporter who used to be a former teenage pop star in Canada.

This is your third Maxim shoot...and we just have to say, they just keep getting sexier!

I'm older and more comfortable with my femininity. The first time I was about 19 and was very nervous. I was more of a tomboy, I guess. I've always had a great time shooting with Maxim. I feel like it gives me my freedom. It's an edgy magazine, so it's cool.

What dating advice would you give Maxim readers?

I like a classy man, a gentleman who opens the door and gives flowers and always puts the lady first. I'm a little old-fashioned like that.

We know you’ve had a very trying week, and we want you to know that Maxim loves you. How are you feeling right now?

I am feeling strong. I’ve experienced a lot in my life, and my mom has given me a lot of faith. This too shall pass.

You just had your birthday. What are you hoping for from the upcoming year?

To focus on myself and my work and to move all press on me to focus on the work I do. Also, I’d like to do more work in India and travel to Malawi.

What is your advice to others about how to cope with adversity?

Stay true to yourself always. At the end of the day, you have to look at yourself in the mirror and be content with the choices you’ve made, and will make, in your life. Go with your gut!

She also talks about the sexy thing in Ballroom dancing, "It’s definitely more cerebral. Usually I allow the music to take me, so it’s been kind of interesting to be like, “One and two, one and two.” But I think there’s something sexy about a woman who’s in control of her body in every way."

Was it fun to do this shoot and not be the little sister for once?

Even in high school it was, “Oh, you’re Spencer’s little sister.” When we got on TV it was, “We hate Spencer’s little sister because she’s related to Spencer!” I’ve never had my own name, so this is exciting.

A lot of people think The Hills is fake. Can you confirm that all the juicy melodrama is legit?

None of us have studied acting. We can’t cry on the spot. My brother really didn’t talk to me for eight months because I went to Lauren Conrad’s birthday party! I think all of us have had the feeling that it would be easier to be on a scripted show.

Has TV helped your love life?

Ugh. The guys in L.A. are so awful. I feel like I know half of them, and the other half I don’t want to know. They’re all wearing Ed Hardy shirts and trucker hats that say female body inspector. But I’m not looking for someone. I do not want to find my Mr. Right at 23.
