Natalie Portman: "I didn't touch pot till I was in my 20s" (Marie Claire January 2010)

Natalie Portman open up and shared some surprising details in the January 2010 issue of Marie Claire.

Some of her interview highlights:

Being a late bloomer in trying out different things: "OK, so I didn't really go to high school parties and yeah, I didn't touch pot till I was in my 20s. I didn't get flat-out drunk until I went to college. But I think that's a good thing in many ways."

Being linked to actor Sean Penn: "He's obviously someone I'm friends with," she says. "I mean, not 'hey, wassup?' friends, but we were all on the [Cannes 2008] jury together—Alfonso [Cuarón] and Marjane [Satrapi]—and we had a really great time, and then...It was one of those things where you're like, 'Oh, my God! I'm that person who's caught in this shitty rumor brigade.' You can't win. You don't say anything and everyone's like, 'It's true.' You say something, and you're keeping the story alive. It's bad, bad news."

Natalie Portman in V magazine December 2009 issue

Adopting an androgynous look with her sexy hairstyle, Natalie Portman looks radiantly fierce in the latest cover of V magazine December 2009 issue (#62). Shot taken by Mario Testino in London last month.

Some of her interview highlights:

Online media prevents her to do sex scene: "It's annoying because online bullshit interferes with what I want to do artistically. I'm not opposed to sexuality or nudity in a film, but I'm very opposed to pornography sites and you're pretty much giving them material if you do any of that. It's always a big dilemma for me."

On being successful: “To be successful, you need the desire to be successful. Ambition can be a dirty word, but it’s pretty much more important than anything.”

Natalie Portman explains "Eating Animals"

Actress-vegetarian Natalie Portman wrote some interesting thoughts via huffingtonpost defending Jonathan Safran Foer’s "Eating Animals". She claims that the author helps her to realized that being vegetarian practitioner is not enough, she must spread the awareness actively.
I've always been shy about being critical of others' choices because I hate when people do that to me. I'm often interrogated about being vegetarian (e.g., "What if you find out that carrots feel pain, too? Then what'll you eat?").
I've also been afraid to feel as if I know better than someone else -- a historically dangerous stance (I'm often reminded that "Hitler was a vegetarian, too, you know"). But this book reminded me that some things are just wrong. Perhaps others disagree with me that animals have personalities, but the highly documented torture of animals is unacceptable, and the human cost Foer describes in his book, of which I was previously unaware, is universally compelling.
